Beginnings

If you had asked me last year to start a blog, I would have brushed off the idea without a second thought; writing is not one of my strengths and I am not one to put my life on display on the internet. However, 2020 has taught me a lot of things about myself that I didn’t know before and with this newfound self awareness I realized that starting a blog and maintaining it long term is something I should be doing.

My primary reasons for starting a blog are:

  1. Materialize my thoughts and thinking process

Quarantine has taught me the value of alone time and the importance of introspection. It is often those moments where I am in my room, late at night, where I get the most powerful surges of self reflective moments. However these moments are so short-lived and impactless that I basically forget everything the next morning, with only having had recollection of the fact that I did peak into my inner self, without remembering what I really saw. I would like to set these ephemeral moments in stone, and put them somewhere where they can’t get erased with a night’s sleep.

2. Improve my communication skills

One thing I have always struggled with is the act of translating my thoughts into words. There have been so many times I would have an interesting thought or idea pass through my mind, and I would struggle communicating it to a friend or work colleague. This has caused a lot of frustration on my part, simply due to the fact that I am not able to come up with the proper sentences to get my point across. Warren Buffet claims communication skills are the most important soft skill an individual can possess, and thus it should make sense for me to write as much as possible to establish a clear link between my thoughts and my words if I am to be an better communicator not only professionally but also socially.

3. Maintain emotional and mental clarity

My mind can sometimes go a million miles per hour and it is easy for me to get sucked up into wandering thoughts. I get distracted and lose sight of my long term goals in favor of short term pleasures that yield no real benefits. I would like to use this blog partially as a mind dump so I can process some of the stuff that goes through my head and offload them so I can focus on what’s real.

4. Engage in a creative pursuit

I have heard many times that human beings need a creative activity in their lives, whether it be writing, dancing, flim making, painting, building things, etc. Looking back on my earlier years I realized that a lot of the most enjoyable moments of my life were when I was engaged in something that made me think creatively. In most recent times there haven’t been too many times I used my brain to think in new ways, and I want to change that.

Overall my commitment to this blog is to produce posts consistently, and utilize this wonderfully convenient platform, Medium, to help me not only better myself as a communicator, but also help me find fulfillment and dive into my psyche. I guess it’s fair to call the four reasons I listed above as goals, and I would like to come back to this post eventually and see just how many of these goals I was able to reach and maintain. For now I would just like to turn this blog into something of substance, one post at a time.
